Senior Laravel Developer

We're looking for an experienced Senior Laravel Developer to join our development team at Shoptimised and help us with the next stage of our platform's development. We're a growing eCommerce SaaS business based in Newcastle, and we've got some exciting projects ahead. One of our main focuses is moving away from our existing monolithic architecture towards a micro-services approach, so we're looking for someone with the experience and confidence to get involved and help us make that happen.

This is a hands-on, full-stack development role, primarily working with PHP and Laravel, but you'll also get involved in frontend development using Livewire, VueJS and Blade. We're a small development team, so you'll have plenty of opportunity to contribute your own ideas, get involved in technical decisions and take ownership of your work. You'll work closely with our Lead Developer and the rest of the team, and we're looking for someone who's happy to share their knowledge and get stuck in.

What you'll be doing

There's a good mix of work involved in this role, from developing new services and features to improving our existing platform.

Some of your responsibilities will include

• Designing and developing Laravel-based services as we move towards a microservices architecture.
• Helping us move functionality away from our existing monolith into more manageable services.
• Taking ownership of development work from initial requirements through to deployment.
• Identifying technical debt and helping us improve the quality and maintainability of our code.
• Working with queues, background processing and asynchronous workflows.
• Improving processes, logging and monitoring the reliability of our systems.
• Introducing and improving PHPUnit test coverage for new and existing features.
• Working closely with the wider team, including QA and Product, to deliver new features and improvements.
• Supporting other developers through code reviews, sharing knowledge and day-to-day collaboration.
• Keeping up to date with Laravel developments and suggesting improvements where they make sense.

What we're looking for

We're looking for someone with strong technical experience who is comfortable working independently, but equally enjoys being part of a team.

Ideally, you'll have

• Strong commercial experience with PHP 8.2+ and Laravel 10+.
• Experience designing, building and maintaining microservices in a production environment.
• Good working knowledge of MySQL, PostgreSQL, Redis and queue-based systems.
• A good understanding of how to build reliable, maintainable applications.
• Experience with testing, logging, monitoring and troubleshooting.
• The ability to work across the full stack, including frontend development when needed.
• Confidence in taking ownership of projects and working through technical challenges.
• Good communication skills and a willingness to share ideas and knowledge with the team.

A bit about us

Shoptimised was created when our founders, who were running a PPC agency, couldn't find an affordable product feed optimisation platform that did everything they needed. So, they built their own! Since then, we've grown into an established eCommerce SaaS business, helping retailers and agencies improve and manage their product feeds.

We're a relatively small business, with a close-knit team and plenty of plans for the future. Our development team is currently making some changes to how we work. We've recently introduced a new four-week development cycle, with dedicated time for development, testing, fixes and planning. We're also reviewing how we approach technical work as we continue to develop the platform.

Why join us?

• You'll have a say; We're a small team, and we want people to contribute ideas and challenge how things are done.
• You'll be working on something meaningful, We're making some significant changes to our platform, and you'll be involved in how we approach them.
• Plenty of variety; From developing new services to improving existing functionality, there's a good range of work to get involved in.
• A hands-on role; You'll be involved in technical discussions and decisions, but this is very much a development role.
• A friendly team; We're a close-knit bunch, and we want someone who enjoys working with others and sharing knowledge.

Interested?

If you've got strong Laravel experience, enjoy solving technical challenges and like the idea of joining a smaller team where you can have real input, we'd love to hear from you.
