Job Title: Legacy Application Developer
Industry: Financial Data Management
Contract Duration: 3 months
Location: York/Hybrid
Day Rate: £450 to £575 per day, dependent on experience
The Role
- Modernise access to Fiscal, our client's established legacy product, so it runs reliably on modern browsers instead of Internet Explorer or Edge's IE mode.
- Work directly with an experienced internal team member who will walk you through Fiscal and provide ongoing support throughout the contract.
- Identify and remove Internet Explorer-specific dependencies (e.g. ActiveX controls, VBScript, compatibility-mode behaviours) from the front end.
- Rebuild or adapt affected screens using HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript, while keeping the underlying VB and SQL Server logic largely intact.
- Make minor, targeted changes to the core product where genuinely needed to support the browser migration, without altering its core functionality.
- Test thoroughly across modern browsers to make sure Fiscal behaves consistently for end users after the change.
- Liaise with the client's wider technical team as needed for context and sign-off, while working largely independently day to day.
- Keep a non-technical stakeholder updated in plain, jargon-free language as the work progresses.
Skills Needed
- Strong hands-on experience with HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript
- Solid experience with VB (VB6 / VBA / VBScript / VB.NET) on a legacy codebase
- SQL Server experience
- A track record of migrating legacy, browser-dependent applications off Internet Explorer / IE mode
- Comfortable working independently with minimal day-to-day oversight, while staying collaborative and easy to work with
- Strong communication skills, able to explain technical trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders
- Able to start at short notice and commit to regular time in our York office
