You’ve probably noticed it already, AI isn't on its way; it's already here. Whether through apps that streamline our personal lives, or through tools that are transforming how business operates, AI has become an integral component of every day working life.

By the end of 2026, being able to work side-by-side with AI will be less about if you want to; it'll be about whether you continue to stand still or whether you choose to remain competitive.

AI’s Impact Across Every Industry

It doesn’t matter which industry you're employed in the Healthcare industry, Education sector, Finance industry, or Marketing industry, AI is evolving what success in your field looks like.

The good news is you don't need to be a Data Scientist to remain relevant. All you need to know is how AI functions, what AI can do for you, and how to collaborate (not compete) with AI. Consider AI as a coworker and one that can assist you in making better decisions, completing tasks quicker, and providing insight you've previously been unable to obtain.

So, what exactly does it mean to have "AI Skills"? Simply put, it isn't just about writing code, developing algorithms, and so on. The foundation of having "AI Skills" begins with being literate in data. Data Literacy means being able to understand your data and being able to recognize patterns within that data so that you can make better smarter decisions. Following this, comes Machine learning awareness.

Machine learning awareness means you have an understanding (in general terms) of how systems are able to learn from data and improve themselves over time. And just like Machine learning awareness is important, Ethical AI Understanding is also equally as important, as it ensures that technology is used responsibly and transparently. Together, these three pillars form a well-rounded set of skills that blend technical awareness with human judgment.

Developing an AI Mindset

There are a few important things you need to know about developing “AI fluency”. The most important one being developing an "AI Mindset" versus just getting proficient at the tool. It does not matter if you are able to master every tool out there (and believe me, I could spend the rest of my career on that). What matters is that you start to develop the confidence and capabilities to use the technology you have today.

The best thing you can do is take small steps to become familiar with how AI is changing your work now. This might mean using automation to free up time for higher value work, or finding ways to leverage data visualization to make decisions and inform your strategy.

These small steps will build confidence and capabilities over time. A good rule of thumb when it comes to AI development is to approach it like you would any other long term professional goal.

Building Your AI Learning Plan

Develop a plan that includes hands-on experiences, online training, and peer-to-peer conversations with colleagues who are working with AI in their day-to-day work. The more familiar you become with AI, the more opportunities you will find to effectively incorporate it into your day-to-day workflow.

Staying Curious in a Fast Changing World

Remember, technology changes fast; staying curious and continually refreshing your knowledge base is what differentiates those who are going to be successful at adapting to change and those who are going to fall behind.

AI is transforming the job market but, at the same time, it's opening up new possibilities for creativity, innovation, and development as well.
